Building:
Part of the Former Littlewoods building

This building was built in 1967 as a single structure for Littlewoods (plus grocer John Quality at No. 54). The main part (Nos 55-59) was split into two shops in 1998.

Schuh (shoe shop)

Schuh is a chain of shoe shops founded by Sandy Alexander in 1980. Despite being named for the German word for 'shoe,' the company is Scottish, not German.

 

Building:
Part of Nos. 52-53, Broad Street

This building, containing two shops, was erected in 1981 to replace the premises of furniture retailer Waring & Gillow, which had burnt to a shell in a fire in 1979 (Waring & Gillow relocated elsewhere).

River Island was founded as ladies fashion retailer Lewis Separates in 1948. It was renamed Chelsea Girl in 1965 and River Island in 1988.
