Scene Showing Nos. 63-66

This scene really shows that the architect of the 1992 Woolworths building wasn't trying to make it stand out like its 1939 art deco predecessor, but was instead making it blend in unobtrusively. To this purpose, he clearly took his design cues from its Victorian-era neighbour at No. 65-66.

Broad Street

Reading's main shopping street, Broad Street was laid out shortly after the foundation of Reading Abbey in 1120. It appeared as 'Brode Stret' on John Speed's map of 1611 and hosted the Glorious Revolution's only battle in 1688. Until 1862, its eastern end comprised two narrow, parallel streets - Butcher Row & Fisher Row.

The western part of Broad Street was pedestrianised in 1992. Re-paving with red brick to more clearly delineate pedestrian areas was completed in 1994. This also fixed the problem of increasingly uneven paving on the former pedestrian pavement, which would have needed replacement anyway.

Reading

Reading is a town in the English county of Berkshire. It is regarded as the county town although, since the county council was abolished in 1998, that is a distinction of traditional rather than practical significance. It is the UK's largest town, having been denied official city status no less than four times - in 2000, 2002, 2012 and 2022. As such, it remains a borough, and has held that status since at least the time of the Domesday Book in 1068. A royal charter, granting independence from control by Reading Abbey, was issued in 1253. A second charter was issued in 1542, reflecting the abbey's dissolution in 1538. Since 1998, the borough has been a unitary authority.

Building:
Part of Nos. 65-66 and No. 67, Broad Street (combined)

No. 67 was built in the Norman Shaw style in the 1890s and was Grade II listed in 1978. Nos. 65-66 were probably erected in 1886, when trade directories list no occupant at that address.

Halifax (bank)

Halifax was founded as a building society in Halifax in 1853. It demutualised in 1997 and merged with Bank of Scotland in 2001. This merged entity was then bought by Lloyds TSB in 2009.

2001 - Halifax plc merged with the Bank of Scotland to form HBOS plc. Halifax branches continued to trade under the Halifax name and brand. Halifax refurbished the interior of its Broad Street branch.

Building:
Part of the Woolworths building (1992)

This building was erected for Woolworths in 1992 to replace its previous premises which had been destroyed by a fire while they were vacant for refurbishment. It is surprisingly sympathetic to its environment, having been clearly designed to mimic the style of its westward neighbour at Nos. 65-66.

Woolworths (variety retailer)

Founded in 1909 as part of the American FW Woolworth Company (est. 1879), the UK variety retailer Woolworth was sold off in 1982 and slightly rebranded as Woolworths with an 's' in 1984. It went into administration at the end of 2008 and ceased trading.
