A complete Abbey shopfront redesign was planned in 2003, with an entirely new glass-fronted appearance, but this never got beyond mock-up images on account of the sale to Santander.

Broad Street

Reading's main shopping street, Broad Street was laid out shortly after the foundation of Reading Abbey in 1120. It appeared as 'Brode Stret' on John Speed's map of 1611 and hosted the Glorious Revolution's only battle in 1688. Until 1862, its eastern end comprised two narrow, parallel streets - Butcher Row & Fisher Row.

The western part of Broad Street was pedestrianised in 1992. Re-paving with red brick to more clearly delineate pedestrian areas was completed in 1994. This also fixed the problem of increasingly uneven paving on the former pedestrian pavement, which would have needed replacement anyway.

Reading

Reading is a town in the English county of Berkshire. It is regarded as the county town although, since the county council was abolished in 1998, that is a distinction of traditional rather than practical significance. It is the UK's largest town, having been denied official city status no less than four times - in 2000, 2002, 2012 and 2022. As such, it remains a borough, and has held that status since at least the time of the Domesday Book in 1068. A royal charter, granting independence from control by Reading Abbey, was issued in 1253. A second charter was issued in 1542, reflecting the abbey's dissolution in 1538. Since 1998, the borough has been a unitary authority.

Building:
Former Collins & Son building / Grand Cinema

Built in 1905 for butchers Collins & Son, this building was converted into a cinema in 1911 and then a car showroom in 1922. In 1929 it became a café and then served as various shops and banks from 1975 onwards.

Abbey (bank)

Abbey National was a building society, and later bank, formed in 1944 by the merger of the Abbey Road (est. 1874) and National (est. 1849) building societies. It demutualised in 1989 and rebranded as just 'Abbey' in 2003. It was bought by Spanish bank Santander in 2004 and rebranded as such in 2010.

2003 - With its previous minor brand refreshes having been ineffective, Abbey National reinvented itself with a major rebranding exercise. It shortened its name to Abbey and adopted a whole new corporate identity.

Building:
No. 99, Broad Street

This building has been around since at least the 1890s and probably dates back to 1882, when it was occupied by hatters and hosiers Thomas Reed & Son.

Portman Building Society (building society)

The Portman Building Society was a mutual building society founded in London in 1881 as the Portman Chapel Temperance Permanent Benefit Building Society. It absorbed several other building societies during the 1980s and '90s but was itself merged into the Nationwide Building Society in 2006.

2003 - JJB Sports moved to No. 90. The vacated No. 99 was then occupied by Portman Building Society, which had moved from No. 25, King Street.
