Nos. 38-39 Broad Street (north side) - 2026

Building & Occupier Details

Building:
Nos. 38-39, Broad Street

Nos. 38 & 39 were remodelled for WH Smith in 1988. The Grade II listed No. 38 was altered to match the appearance of other parts of the 1903 Queen Victoria Street development, while No. 39 - not a part of that development - was demolished and also rebuilt to match.

Nos. 38-39
TG Jones (newsagent, bookseller & stationer)

A newsagent, bookseller and stationer, TG Jones comprises the former high street division of WH Smith (est. 1792), which was bought in 2025 by equity firm Modella Capital (est. 2022). Its name is intended to sound similar to 'WH Smith' and so evoke trust but is pure invention; there is no such person as TG Jones.

2026 - Owners Modella Capital announced plans to close 150 of their 451 TG Jones branches as part of a restructuring plan. The branch at Nos. 38-89, Broad Street was not named as one of those condemned, unlike the one in nearby Wokingham.
