No clear images of O2's signage at No. 51 were available, so the sign depicted is in keeping with those of other O2 stores elsewhere at the time. Also, no clear images of Optical Express were available, so its appearance is based on that of other stores and employs the corporate logo in use at the time.

Broad Street

Reading's main shopping street, Broad Street was laid out shortly after the foundation of Reading Abbey in 1120. It appeared as 'Brode Stret' on John Speed's map of 1611 and hosted the Glorious Revolution's only battle in 1688. Until 1862, its eastern end comprised two narrow, parallel streets - Butcher Row & Fisher Row.

The western part of Broad Street was pedestrianised in 1992. Re-paving with red brick to more clearly delineate pedestrian areas was completed in 1994. This also fixed the problem of increasingly uneven paving on the former pedestrian pavement, which would have needed replacement anyway.

Reading

Reading is a town in the English county of Berkshire. It is regarded as the county town although, since the county council was abolished in 1998, that is a distinction of traditional rather than practical significance. It is the UK's largest town, having been denied official city status no less than four times - in 2000, 2002, 2012 and 2022. As such, it remains a borough, and has held that status since at least the time of the Domesday Book in 1068. A royal charter, granting independence from control by Reading Abbey, was issued in 1253. A second charter was issued in 1542, reflecting the abbey's dissolution in 1538. Since 1998, the borough has been a unitary authority.

No. 51, Broad Street

This building was erected in 1975 and replaced a former Woolworth's building from the 1920s. It was initially occupied by a John Farmer shoe shop.

O2 (telecommunications retailer)

Telefonica UK Limited (trading as O2) is a telecoms retailer headquartered in Reading. It was founded in 1984 as Cellnet, a 60/40 joint venture between British Telecom and Securicor. BT bought out Securicor in 1999 and the rebranded O2 was spun off as a separate company in 2002. It merged with Virgin Media in 2021.

2002 - BT's mobile service provider, BT Cellnet, was spun off as a separate company with the new name O2. The Broad Street BT shop became an O2 one, with new branding.

Building:
Former H Samuel 'Jewel Centre'

This building was erected in 1966 as an ultra-modern three-storey 'Jewel Centre' for jeweller H Samuel, with a lift between the floors. It replaced two former shops on the site.

 

No. 50
Optical Express (optician and/or optometrist)

Optical Express is an optical retail and eyecare chain founded by David Moulsdale in 1990. It lays claim to be the UK's leading laser eye surgery provider.

2002 - The Health Clinic fired its finance director for gross misconduct and entered administration in October, after discovering losses to have been severely understated. Its chain of twelve Eye Clinics and eight Health Clinics was purchased by Optical Express and absorbed into that business.
